RESUMO A contínua substituição da cobertura florestal pelo cultivo agrícola e a urbanização causaram alterações na maior parte do bioma Mata Atlântica no Brasil. O entendimento da interação entre os fatores físicos, antrópicos e da cobertura vegetal em uma paisagem é de fundamental importância para oferecer subsídios ao planejamento territorial de forma sustentável. Este estudo investigou a influência da altitude, declividade e orientação das vertentes na cobertura florestal em três diferentes paisagens no município de Vassouras, RJ. No geral, as áreas analisadas apresentaram a cobertura florestal fragmentada, porém foi observada uma paisagem com maior cobertura florestal do que pastagens. Entre as variáveis analisadas, a altitude e a declividade apresentaram uma relação positiva com a cobertura florestal. As paisagens estavam inseridas em diferentes contextos socioeconômicos que podem também determinar a distribuição da cobertura florestal atual. A região estudada oferece atributos socioambientais específicos de cada paisagem, cuja compreensão deve ser útil ao planejamento ambiental.

ABSTRACT The continuous replacement of forest covers for crops and urban areas changed most of the Atlantic Forest biome in Brazil. Hence, understanding the interaction between the forest cover, physical and anthropic factors in a landscape is essential in order to provide subsidies for sustainable land use. The present study aimed at investigating the influence of the altitude, declivity, and slope orientation on the forest cover of three landscapes in the municipality of Vassouras. In general, Vassouras showed fragmented forest covers, but we observed a landscape covered more by forests than pastures. Among the variables analyzed, altitude and declivity showed a positive relationship with forest cover. The analyzed landscapes were inserted in different socio-economical contexts, which can also affect the current forest cover distribution. The socio-environmental attributes of those landscapes are specific and their understanding can be strategic for environmental planning.

RESUMO A riqueza e diversidade de espécies de formigas podem ser maiores em ambientes de complexidade mais elevada devido a uma maior disponibilidade de nichos presentes. Em razão da conexão entre os organismos e as características dos habitats, as formigas têm sido utilizadas como ferramentas no monitoramento ambiental de áreas perturbadas. Neste estudo, foi investigada a estrutura da comunidade de formigas em parcelas utilizadas para reabilitação de uma área de mineração na Ilha da Madeira, Itaguaí, RJ. Encontrou-se uma fauna diferenciada de formigas e maior riqueza de espécies em parcelas nas quais foi utilizado um maior número de espécies arbóreas nativas do que em parcelas com poucas espécies arbóreas ou sem nenhuma intervenção conservacionista.

ABSTRACT Ant species richness and diversity may be increased in more complex habitats because they provide more niches and diverse ways of exploiting the environmental resources. Because of the connection between the organisms and habitat characteristics, ants have been used as tools for environmental monitoring of disturbed areas. In this study the structure of the ant community was investigated in plots with different management strategies for the rehabilitation of a mined area at Ilha da Madeira, Itaguaí, RJ, Brazil. A different and richer ant fauna was found in plots with more native tree species than in plots with a low number of tree species or without conservationist management.

Abstract The loss of biodiversity has been of much concern throughout the world. Globally 13 million ha are annually converted to agricultural use, mainly from forests. In the past, conservation of tropical ecosystems was concentrated on preserved areas. The fact is that most of terrestrial ecosystems is an agroecosystem. One main question is to know what part of biodiversity does or could function in specific ways to promote the sustainability of future systems. Ants are organisms that frequently have been cited as important for conservation and useful as bioindicators. Ant species may act as biological control agents in agroecosystems and reduce undesirable pests. The influence of ant colonies on the environment is enhancing by their ground foraging activities, with possible impacts on both soil and vegetation. However conventional agriculture has a negative impact on ant diversity whereas traditional agriculture systems often are better for biodiversity conservation. One main challenge of this millennium is to find ways to link sustainable use of biodiversity with socio-economic benefits for human populations.

Resumo No mundo todo o alerta sobre a perda da biodiversidade tem preocupado muito. Globalmente, 13 milhões de hectares de terra são convertidos em agroecossistemas, principalmente de áreas com florestas. No passado muito dos esforços conservacionistas estavam focados nas áreas preservadas. O fato é que a maioria dos ecossistemas terrestres é um agroecossistema. Uma das principais questões é saber que parte da biodiversidade funciona ou poderia funcionar de modo específico para promover a sustentabilidade dos sistemas no futuro. As formigas são organismos freqüentemente citados como importantes para a conservação e úteis como indicadores biológicos. Formigas podem agir como agentes de controle biológico em agroecossistemas e reduzir populações de pragas indesejáveis. A influência das colônias de formigas sobre o ambiente pode ser aumentada pelas suas atividades de forrageamento com possíveis impactos sobre o solo e vegetação. A agricultura convencional tem um impacto negativo sobre a diversidade de formigas, enquanto sistemas agrícolas tradicionais freqüentemente são melhores em conservar a biodiversidade. Um dos principais desafios do milênio será o de tentar conciliar o uso sustentável da biodiversidade com benefícios sócio-econômicos para as populações humanas.
